Share
Baseboards and trim might seem like a small detail, but they make or break the finished look of any room.
Baseboard Height Guide
- 8 ft ceilings: 3.5 - 5.25 inches
- 9 ft ceilings: 5.25 - 7.25 inches
- 10 ft+ ceilings: 7.25 - 9+ inches
Profile Styles
Modern: Flat stock, pencil round, square edge.
Traditional: Colonial, Victorian, Craftsman.
Transitional: Stepped or bevelled profiles - works with anything.
Materials
- MDF (primed): Smooth, paintable, affordable. Best for most rooms.
- PVC/Vinyl: Waterproof. Use in bathrooms and basements.
- Solid Wood: Stainable, premium look.
- Polystyrene: Lightweight, easy to install.
Door and Window Casings
Casing width should be slightly narrower than your baseboard height. Standard widths: 2.5 to 3.5 inches.
Crown Moulding
Use when: 9ft+ ceilings, traditional style.
Skip when: 8ft ceilings, modern look, tight budget.
Installation Tips
- Measure twice, cut once
- Use a mitre saw for clean 45 degree corners
- Cope inside corners
- Pre-prime all sides before installing
- Use construction adhesive plus nails
- Caulk the top edge for a seamless line
The Bottom Line
Match baseboard height to ceiling height. Pick a profile that fits your style. Use MDF for most rooms, PVC for wet areas.
